THE EQUIPMENT OF AM RADIO
The Classical Reformer was designed with very specific measurements and components. When you change these measurements and components the whole point of why you're doing Pilates in the first place drastically changes. The newer "styles" of Reformers do not give you the same feedback into your body, nor the benefits the classical Reformer was initially designed to do.
Each and every component of the classical Reformer was carefully and thoroughly designed by Joseph Pilates (for a reason) ... everything from the size of the footbar (which was made specifically to do footwork properly and create grip strength in ones hands and wrists)... to the four equally weighted springs (that were designed to have a specific amount of tension and symmetry )... to the width of the shoulder blocks as well as the adjustable head rest (made for different cervical spine positioning).
The true Classical Reformer also always has leather straps that are placed within the frame below (this recruits your upper body and core to work a very specific way) along with handles that grip in the hand for specific muscles in the arms to engage. It's a chain reaction of sorts. When you hold a strap or rope (like used on contemporary Reformers), the recruited muscles change and do not engage thus changing the entire goal and benefit of the exercises.
Leather straps also create more feedback into your muscles (ropes DO NOT do this). We always ask students that come into AM RADIO - "Did you not think Joseph Pilates tried ropes or even had ropes when designing his equipment?" He knew what he was doing when he made it with LEATHER.
At the end of the day, the Reformer was designed to 'reform' your body’s movement patterns, eliminating bad habits, improving posture, strength, and mobility
